Buddhism, Tibet, and the Four Nobler Truths : Special Lectures with Professor Robert A.F. Thurman at Tibet House US in New York City

This evening we will introduce three central concepts of world Buddhism, originating in India and spreading all over the world. We will discuss the original teaching framework of Shakyamuni’s first turning of the wheel of Dharma, the wheel of the “four noble truths,” with special emphasis on his treatment of the third noble truth, that of nirvana. We will then turn to his teachings as recorded in texts such as the Vimalakirti, Lotus, and Flower Ornament Sutras, as well as in the various Tantric revelations, in which he emphasizes the universal vehicle teaching of the nonduality of samsara and nirvana, where he presents his deepest characterization of reality as understandable accoding to what we are emboldened to call “the four nobler truths,” in order to encourage ourselves to shift our minds toward the Buddha’s most realistic, surprisingly positive perspective on our human selves and our environment.
