Divine Messengers with Bob Thurman, Françoise Pommaret & Stephanie Guyer-Stevens
November 20-11:00 am - 12:30 pm EST
As mystics, healers, and travelers to the netherworld, female shamans are “divine messengers” in Bhutan, who act as mediums for local spirits, cure diseases through prayer, and travel to the realm of the dead. They are sometimes referred to as “sky-goers,” “reincarnations,” or “returners from the beyond,” and their stories are intimately connected with the Buddhist ideas of karma and rebirth. Thinking that these female shamans were dying out, journalist Stephanie Guyer-Stevens and anthropologist Françoise Pommaret traveled through Bhutan to meet them. They found that, rather than fading, these practitioners are thriving and even proliferating.
In this talk, Stephanie and Françoise will discuss the roles of female shamans in Bhutan, Buddhism and spirituality in Bhutan, and their research and travels in the Himalayas.
This is a hybrid event and there are separate ticket options for in-person and online participation. Limited tickets are available for in-person attendance. To learn more and to register, please visit: www.eventbrite.com.
